Contemporary Art Space Tour / C.A.S.T.

Besides the richness of culture and tradition, Indonesia has also a long history of arts, from modern to current times. Contemporary art is no foreign to Indonesian artists and has developed along archipelago since the 1970s with the first New Art Movement initiated by students at Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) in Yogyakarta.

The city itself hosts tens of art spaces dispersed from South to North, a popular annual art fair, biennials, triennials and other large scale events. The map of contemporary art spaces is extremely diverse, artists working with various media and across disciplines. What makes the local scene interesting are the DIY art practices, collective work and spaces, projects, as well the presence of thousands of talented painters.

The tour will introduce the various art spaces in the city, from art collectives to fancy art galleries, with the help of an art enthusiast guide. It will explore the ongoing exhibitions, history of the spaces, providing valuable insights about the uniqueness of this artistic city and the diversity of the scene.

After visiting selected art spaces, the tour will end up in the intimacy of an artist studio where you can relax, chat with the artists and get your hands on valuable information directly from artists.
